The Hugh Deane collection includes several hundred books and pamphlets on a wide range of topics on East Asia. Particularly noteworthy are books signed and inscribed by noted colleagues and friends of Deane. Some of the gems in the collection are the pamphlets Deane acquired over six-plus decades. This "remarkable and fairly comprehensive" collection, as Hugh's son Michael Deane describes it, includes many items found in very few libraries. The fact that Deane, as his son notes, "was quite keen on keeping this stuff, sometimes over Mom's objections" is an indication of the lasting value he saw in these materials.
Hugh Deane (1916-2001) was a noted scholar and journalist, and collected many of these documents during his frequent travels to East Asia. Lewis and Clark College acquired the Collection in 2001, and showcases the materials in Watzek Library's Special Collections. Though only a dozen or so items are currently available in digital format, this number is expected to increase in the near future.
