About the Festivals of the Minaksi Temple Collection

This photographic collection focuses on the religious
festivals of the Minaksi-Sundaresvara Temple in Madurai, Tamilnad. Most of the images document the main annual festivals of this South Indian Hindu temple, such as the Chittrai and Avani Mula festivals, in which decorated images of the Hindu deities Minaksi (the Goddess), Siva Sundaresvara, and others process through the streets of the city. Other photographs in the collection depict the temple itself and its setting within the city of Madurai. A descriptive essay on the festivals of the temple is under preparation, to accompany the images.

The collection is intended to be an ongoing project of
description and photographic documentation. Photos in the collection date back as far as 1982, but the largest number at present dome from the 2004 Chittrai festival and the 2007 Avani Mula festival. Most of the photos were taken by Richard Davis, but the collection will also welcome photos by others.
